SolarCity wants 'solar shingles' on 5 million more roofs

SolarCity wants to persuade 5 million American households to replace their roofs with solar-energy shingles.

Instead of installing panels on top of an existing roof, the company is working on "solar shingles" that would replace a home's roof and absorb solar energy.

>> Read more trending stories

About 1 million Americans have solar panels on their homes, so adding an additional 5 million to that list would be quite the accomplishment.

But the company seems to think the solar shingles can fix some of the biggest problems associated with solar energy.

Elon Musk, the company's chairman, said the solar roofing looks better and lasts longer than normal roofing.

And Musk said installing or replacing the solar shingles shouldn't be much different than when it is for those who use regular roofing materials.

But the company will still need to keep costs down if it wants to see mainstream adoption.

The Dow Chemical Company recently had to discontinue its line of solar shingles because the product wasn't selling -- likely because they were more expensive and less efficient than typical solar panels.

SolarCity isn't talking about the price or energy output of its shingles yet.

Right now, it's in the middle of a merger with Tesla Motors, which could open up the option to package the solar shingles with Tesla products such as the home battery. That could make the adoption process for solar roofing easier and cheaper.

Cucamelon: 5 things to know about the cute fruit

A little-known fruit is making headlines this summer for its big flavor.

Here's what you need to know about cucamelons:

1. What is a cucamelon? According to the Huffington Post, the cucamelon is a fruit that looks like a tiny watermelon but tastes more like a lime-dipped cucumber. It's also known as Mexican sour gherkin, Mexican miniature watermelon, Mexican sour cucumber and mouse melon, BuzzFeed reports.

2. Where do cucamelons grow? Cucamelons originated in Mexico and Central America, BuzzFeed reports. The fruit, which is about the size of a grape, grows on a vine.

3. Where can I get them? They are sold at some farmer's markets, but your best bet is to grow them yourself, the Huffington Post reports. You can buy seeds online here.

4. How do I grow them? According to Home-Grown Revolution, you should "sow the seed from April to May indoors and plant out when all risk of frost is over." The vine will also need a support or trellis to grown on, SF Gate reports. Learn more here or here.

5. What's the best way to eat them? The Huffington Post recommends eating cucamelons straight from the vine, adding them to salads, pickling them or using them to garnish cocktails.

EXHIBITOR UPDATE #4

July 18, 2016

Only 11 days left until the show!

Good afternoon and welcome to the latest Home & Garden Expo of Oklahoma exhibitor update!

1)      Hopefully by now you've already done so, but if not, make sure to visit the official Exhibitor Resource Center webpage by CLICKING HERE, or copying the following link and pasting it into your browser: http://www.krmg.com/news/lifestyles/home-garden/hgeo-exhibitor-resource-center/nqNm6/.   One of the most important links is for the official Exhibitor Service Manual.  It's considered part of your exhibitor agreement and contains info that’s vital to your participation in our show.  Please read it and give us a call if you have any questions.

2)      Since we're just about a week away from kicking off exhibitor move-in for this show, please double-check your scheduled move-in day/time by visiting the Exhibitor Move-in Schedule that's posted on the Exhibitor Resource Center webpage.  Let us know if we need to make any changes.

3)      If you still have a balance due on your booth fee, please get that taken care of ASAP. All booth fees must be paid before move-in starts on Tuesday, July 26th.  Please make sure your payment is received by that date.  Missing this deadline can result in the loss of your booth space AND your deposit. If you need help, visit the CMG Payment Info web page for details.

4)      Please be sure you've read about the liability insurance requirements that are in force for this show.  They're on page 8 of your Exhibitor Service Manual.  Don’t wait until the last minute to get this taken care of!  If you haven't provided us a certificate of liability (and workmen’s comp insurance if you're required to carry it) listing Cox Radio, Inc. and Tulsa Public Facilities Authority as additional insureds, you will NOT be allowed in the building to set up your booth!  You can see if we have NOT received your proof of insurance by visitng the Liability Insurance Information page now. If your company name is listed here, please contact your insurance agent and ask them to forward your proof of coverage to us today. If you have any questions, please call me ASAP and I’ll help you out.

5)      If you're on Facebook, please visit our show page at https://www.facebook.com/HomeandGardenExpoofOklahoma/?fref=ts or just type Home & Garden Expo of Oklahoma in the search bar at the top of your own FB page to find it.  Click the Like button and then share the page with your customers and friends.  You’re encouraged to write a post about your attendance at the show to invite new customers to come and see you.

6)      There's still time - if you would like to use the official show logo on any of your social media sites, please email me and I’ll be glad to send it to you.  Let me know what format you need the logo in.

7)       Each 8x8 and 10x10 booth space comes with a ONE free covered and skirted 6-foot folding table and 2 folding chairs. For larger booths, you get additional tables/chairs for each extra booth space you have (a 10x20 booth gets 2 tables and 4 chairs for example). With this show however, past experience tells us that most exhibitors do NOT use their tables and chairs, so please let us know if you DO want the free table(s) you're entitled to. Click the link that says Table Reservation Form here or on the Exhibitor Resource Center web page. Download the form, fill it out and email or fax it back to us before July 22nd and we'll make sure your table(s) will be in your booth when you arrive to move in.

8)    If your display contains any kind of water feature (swimming pool, hot tub, water garden, etc.) you are required to provide us with after-hours contact info in case of a water leak. Download the After Hours Emergency Contact Information form on the Exhibitor Resource Center web page and email or fax it to us prior to your move-in day.

That’s it for this edition.  Don’t hesitate to call or email me at the numbers/address below if you have any questions. Have a terrific week!
