NEW YORK, NY —

A “poor door” will be installed in an upscale apartment on New York’s Upper West Side.

The plan is part of the Inclusionary Housing Program application. The program allows developers to construct huge complexes if they include low-income housing, either in the building or at another site. Builders also get other benefits, including tax credits, under the program.

Anyone making 60 percent or less of the median income earned by those in the rest of the building would be forced to use the alternate entrance.

New York Magazine wrote, the door will spare “all the residents from the terrible awkwardness of regularly encountering people whose lifestyles differ from theirs, or something."

Opinions on the separate doors have been mixed. Many call it nothing more than “updated segregation.” Others say it makes good business sense.
