What was supposed to be a fun birthday celebration turned into a deadly crime scene near Houston, Texas late Saturday night.

KTRK reports two people died and 22 others were injured in a late night shooting. Police say at least 18 of the 24 injured were shot. They think the others were injured trying to get out of the house.

The two killed were one man and one woman. Authorities say one of them died at the scene while the other died at the hospital. At least one victim is listed in critical condition while others sustained minor injuries. (Via KPRC)

The two dozen victims made up just a fraction of those who were at the party. KRIV points out there were about 100 guests, mostly teenagers, inside the two-story house when the shooting happened.

The Houston Chronicle described the partygoers' desperate attempts to get out of the house. Witnesses say some guests on the second floor broke windows and jumped out to escape while others broke a garage door to get out.

As of Sunday morning, police are searching for two suspects believed to be the gunmen. The names of the suspects and victims haven't been released. (Via WPVI)

As for a motive, that's still unclear. An officer with the Harris County Sheriff's Office says they're looking at several possibilities.

GILLILAND: "We're still trying to figure out what stemmed this whole ordeal in the beginning whether it was a fight, whether it was a previous altercation. We do know that the gunfire came from within the house. It wasn't a drive-by." (Via Fox News)

The Houston Chronicle says at least one parent was in the house when the shooting happened but the homeowners were not. Police say they are also working to determine whether alcohol was served at the party.
