AUSTIN, Texas —

There are some things in life you just don’t joke about.

Domestic violence is one of them.

A downtown Austin bar learned that lesson the hard way over the weekend.

An employee at Minibar posted what he no doubt thought was an eye-catching message on a sidewalk chalkboard, promoting the bar’s assortment of domestic beers.

It sure did catch plenty of attention … but for all the wrong reasons.

The message: “I like my beer like I like my violence: domestic.”

It wasn’t long before a snapshot of the sign was plastered all over social media sites. Huffington Post picked up on it. So did ABC’s “Good Morning America,” the nation’s most-watched morning news show.

Owners of the bar quickly took to Facebook to apologize. The employee who made the sign has been “released,” according to one post.

“I assure everyone yesterday was an isolated incident and was definitely not a reflection of minibar what so ever,” owner Alex Elmiger wrote on Facebook.

To make amends, Minibar says it will donate $1 to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence for each domestic beer it sells this month.

Seetha Kulandaisamy says she’s the person who took the now-infamous photo. In a Facebook post, she says she never could have imagined all the attention it’s getting worldwide.

“Perhaps I am exceptionally sensitive to these issues but clearly there are a lot more people that care about these issues as well and, as a result, made that known when they called Minibar to voice their complaints,” Kulandaisamy said. “I truly appreciate the actions that the owner Alex has taken to make amends and hope to visit the establishment soon.”
