VERDIGRIS, Okla. —

Quick facts:

  • Tuesday, a Rogers County judge sentenced a man to life in prison for murdering his 32-year-old wife back in 2015 in Verdigris.
  • Authorities say William Leathers claimed he was playing with his gun and that it was an accident when he shot his wife, Susan Leathers, in the face.
  • However, prosecutors successfully went after murder charges, saying his version of events weren’t adding up.
  • When investigators arrived to answer the 911 call, court documents say it was the couple’s 18-month-old child who they first saw at the front door.
  • Prosecutors say the victim had gone years without seeing her family, because William was so controlling.
  • Leathers’ stepmother said in her victim’s statement, “William took the only child we had left. I was proud of her. She was smart, beautiful, funny and musically inclined.”
  • The defendant had entered a guilty plea earlier this year.
  • Williams received another 20 years of prison time for an unrelated DUI case.
