Vietnam War veteran receives welcome 40 years after his return from the battlefield

TULSA, Okla. —

Quick facts:

  • An Green Country man received a welcome home Tuesday.
  • He says he did not come home to a warm welcome after returning from service during the Vietnam War.
  • His family organized a return for him Tuesday.

 

A Vietnam War veteran received a welcome he says he never got when returned to the country Tuesday.

Family members say their plan started as talk in a garage on Christmas, and ended with hundreds of people showing their support for Ronnie Haney.

Haney said he did not receive any sort of return ceremony when he returned from Vietnam 40 years ago. Family members say he was even shunned from society.

After Haney and his son went to Vietnam and Cambodia to make peace with himself in 2017, though, he returned to patriot guard riders, flags, balloons and hugs.

Haney, 71, is a Purple Heart recipient.

He says the return let him know that people do appreciate Vietnam War veterans.
