(January 7, 2021 – TULSA) – Cox Media Group (CMG) Tulsa reasserted its position as Green Country’s leader in community outreach by raising more than $4.8 million through its year-round community-focused initiatives during 2020. Instead of stepping back during the COVID-19 outbreak when the community & nonprofit organizations were reeling, CMG Tulsa reinvented some of its most popular fundraising events to follow mandatory social distancing guidelines.
The four-week STEMtember initiative, focused on education, transitioned to an online format and served more than 25,000 students and educators. When the long-running Tulsa Pride Parade was cancelled, FOX23 stepped up to air a 30-minute documentary on the event and the resources available to local LGBTQ+ individuals and families.
“It would have been easy to use the pandemic as a reason to step back, but we couldn’t when our community needed us the most,” says Cathy Gunther, Market Vice President of Cox Media Group Tulsa. “Our broadcast stations (FOX23, My41, MeTV, 102.3 KRMG, K95.5, Mix 96.5, and 103.3 The Eagle) used their power to help our community with outreach efforts focusing on diversity and inclusion, health, veteran assistance, environmental responsibility, homelessness, hunger, LGBTQ+ advocacy and more.”
CMG Tulsa’s single largest one-day fundraising event benefited the Johnson-Zarkeshan Family Fund and raised more than $600,000 for the families of two Tulsa Police Officers shot in the line of duty.
Beyond the $4.8 million raised, CMG Tulsa also promoted and participated in many events that cannot be reflected in that monetary value: blood drives, environmentally-focused cleanup initiatives, educational events, and more.
CMG Tulsa has a robust community-focused calendar for 2021 as it continues to invest in its community.
