FOX23 is waiting to hear from Oklahoma Speaker of the House Charles McCall about the results of his internal investigation into a controversial email sent Monday that said "cross-dressers are in the building" when referring to LGBTQ students from Green Country there to visit their legislators.

Wednesday, state Democrats called for legislators and state house staff to undergo diversity training.

They say the email did not represent the first time people at the capitol welcomed visitors with bigotry, and they want it to be the last.

Oklahomans for Equality says that would be a welcome development and such a move would allow them to feel like their negative experience served a purpose.

Representative Eric Proctor (D-Tulsa) says he meets with the students every year. He says they should be commended for not letting the contents of the email deter them from civic engagement.

He says it’s a shame the state needs diversity training, but he says it can't hurt.

FOX23's calls to Speaker McCall’s office have gone unanswered.
