Sometimes you just put something out into the universe and the universe delivers.
A fan has unearthed a 2012 video showing Chappell Roan, then going by her birth name Kayleigh Amstutz, winning a local talent contest in Springfield, Missouri. She was 14 at the time, and in the video she's accepting a giant prop check for $1,012. "I want to win a Grammy," she tells the crowd, which laughs in response.
"So that's my goal. And I'm going to do whatever it takes to get it," she adds. "So that'll be the fight for me."
It took her 10 years, but Chappell won that fight on Sunday, taking home the Grammy for best new artist, and wowing the audience and viewers at home with her rendition of "Pink Pony Club." She then made headlines for using her acceptance speech to call for record labels to "offer a livable wage and health care" to their developing artists.
On Instagram, Chappell posted photos of herself at the podium and captioned them, "Thank you to every single person who gave me the courage to keep pushing this project forward, against all odds. This is for you."
