South Tulsa man wrestles gun away from thief in his driveway

TULSA, Okla. — Video captured the moment a south Tulsa man wrestled a gun away from a thief who was trying to steal from his truck. It all happened near 91st and Memorial.

Curtis Sprague says he woke up early Sunday morning, when his ring doorbell alerted him of motion detected in his driveway. He picked up his phone, looked at the camera, and saw someone going through the cars.

Sprague says next he put on a pair of shorts, grabbed a pistol for protection and went outside.

“The best thing I could think of at the moment was slam the door on him,” Sprague said. “I slammed the door on him, started giving him instructions, and he was quite shocked with that.”

He grabbed a gun and identification from the thief, but it didn’t stop there.

“He had a friend with him that was driving the car,” Sprague said. “The car was parked three or four houses down from my house; he got out of the car and decided he was going to come over and maybe try to save his partner.”

He adds, “We had a bit of a short stand-off; I had one guy on the ground and the driver of his vehicle standing up, and about that time is when we started hearing sirens. My wife had called police from inside the house.” The two suspects then ran away.

Sprague says, “The guy that I had in the driveway jumped up and said I have to go to work, and he ran to the car.”

Sprague says the whole thing felt long, but video shows how quickly everything happened. He recommends people don’t do what he did, as it wasn’t the safest option. He says his tactical background and being a veteran helped in this situation, but what is best is to stay inside, call for help and get a great witness description.

The thieves did not get away with anything.
