In a news release, the Westchester County Police Department said that four boys and a girl between the ages of 8 and 17 were killed in the accident.

The crash happened in Scarsdale just after midnight after the car “veered off” the Hutchinson River Parkway, officials say. No other cars were involved in the crash.

Westchester County Police Department spokesperson, Kieran O’Leary said that the car hit a tree and caught fire, according to The Associated Press.

A sixth person, a 9-year-old boy, was in the Nissan Rogue when it crashed, according to the AP. According to law enforcement officials, the boy was sitting in “the rear hatchback/cargo area” of the car and was able to get out through the back. He was taken to the hospital and had non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the driver of the car was a 16-year-old boy.

The names of the deceased have not been released due to out-of-state next-of-kin notifications, police say.

The circumstances behind the crash remain under investigation, according to police.
