The shooting happened after deputies were called to the Walmart on Towne Centre Drive around 9:40 p.m. Officials said three people in the store were suspected of trying to return items that they hadn’t bought.

“According to witness statements, a male subject was uncooperative with deputies’ commands and produced a weapon,” sheriff’s deputies said in a news release. “A deputy-involved shooting occurred, and a male subject was struck.”

Authorities said the man, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital, where he was undergoing surgery Thursday. His condition was not immediately known. Deputies said they recovered a gun and a knife from the scene.

Two other people, identified only as a man and a woman, ran from the Walmart, according to officials. A deputy spotted the man getting into a vehicle and managed to get its license plate number before he left the area. Authorities found the vehicle about 20 miles away in Midway City. A man and a woman matching the description of the people who ran from the Walmart have since been detained, officials said.

Deputies said Thursday that there was “no immediate threat to the community.”

Wednesday’s shooting will be investigated by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. Officials noted that area deputies wear body cameras.
