‘Renegades’: Barack Obama-Bruce Springsteen book set for October release

Rock legend Bruce Springsteen and former President Barack Obama are bringing their podcast to a bookseller near you.

Described by NJ Advance Media as a “deep contemplation on everything from music to American race relations to fatherhood,” the eight-episode “Renegades: Born in the USA” that debuted in February will be reformatted as a 320-page book set for an Oct. 26 release.

The book will expand on the podcast and include more than 350 photographs plus “exclusive bonus content, and never-before-seen archival material,” the outlet reported.

Rolling Stone offered the following excerpt from the book’s introduction, attributed to Obama:

“Over the years, what we’ve found is that we’ve got a shared sensibility. About work, about family, and about America. In our own ways, Bruce and I have been on parallel journeys trying to understand this country that’s given us both so much. Trying to chronicle the stories of its people. Looking for a way to connect our own individual searches for meaning and truth and community with the larger story of America.”

Published by Higher Ground/Penguin Random House, “Renegades” will carry a suggested list price of $50 in the United States and $65 in Canada, with digital editions available for $17.99 and $21.99, respectively, the magazine reported.

According to Rolling Stone, Springsteen offers the following insight in the book’s introduction:

“There were serious conversations about the fate of the country, the fortune of its citizens, and the destructive, ugly, corrupt forces at play that would like to take it all down. This is a time of vigilance when who we are is being seriously tested. Hard conversations about who we are and who we want to become can perhaps serve as a small guiding map for some of our fellow citizens.”

In addition to the joint introduction, NJ Advance Media reported that the collaborative tome will also include:

  • Exclusive new material from the “Renegades” podcast recording sessions.
  • Obama’s never-before-seen annotated speeches, including his “Remarks at the 50th Anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery Marches.”
  • Springsteen’s handwritten lyrics for songs spanning his 50-year career.
  • Rare and exclusive photographs from the authors’ personal archives.
  • Historical photographs and documents that provide rich visual context for their conversation.
